About GFR
Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) is the best test to measure your level of kidney function and determine your stage of kidney disease.
Chronic Kidney Disease Stages
- Stage 1: GFR ≥90 (Normal or high)
- Stage 2: GFR 60-89 (Mild decrease)
- Stage 3a: GFR 45-59 (Mild to moderate decrease)
- Stage 3b: GFR 30-44 (Moderate to severe decrease)
- Stage 4: GFR 15-29 (Severe decrease)
- Stage 5: GFR <15 (Kidney failure)
Understanding Your Results
The GFR calculator uses the CKD-EPI (Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration) equation which estimates kidney function based on:
- Serum creatinine level
- Age
- Gender
- Race (Black or non-Black)

- Results may vary with different creatinine measurement methods
- GFR declines naturally with age (about 1 mL/min/1.73m² per year after age 40)

When to See a Doctor
Consult your healthcare provider if:
- Your eGFR is below 60 for 3 months or more
- You have symptoms like fatigue, swelling, or changes in urination
- You have risk factors for kidney disease (diabetes, hypertension, etc.)
